Recorded burials in this cemetery began in 1836 when the mission was established. The Pioneer Cemetery adjoins the "Great Grave" in which victims of the "Whitman Massacre" are buried. Many of the original markers in the cemetery were destroyed by time or vandalism and have never been replaced. Some of those on the following list of known burials are not actually in the cemetery but are thought to be buried near it.The burial site of the Whitman's baby daughter, Alice Clarissa was somewhere to the north of the main mission house, her tombstone within sight of the house, but not in the same area as either the Pioneer Cemetery or the Great Grave. In addition, there are many Indian graves on the grounds, most from before the Whitmans’ arrival, likely buried at the bottom of Shaft Hill.BURIALS IN THE GREAT GRAVE, WHO DIED NOVEMBER 29-30, 1847WHITMAN, MarcusWHITMAN, Narcissa PrentissROGERS, Andrew, Jr.SAUNDERS, LucienKIMBALL, NathanBEWLEY, Crockett A.GILLILAND, IsaacSAGER, JohnSAGER, FrancisHOFFMAN, JacobMARSH, Walter?SALES, AmosHALL, Peter D.BURIALS NOT INCLUDED IN THE GREAT GRAVEBROWN, D. 1841, also known as Brown's womanCAYUSE INDIAN,Elizabeth, D. 1905, April 10, helped bury massacre victimsFINDLAY, Joseph S., D. 1845, March 6, emigrantGRAY, Mary Augusta Dix, B.
